“Hundreds of employees depend on me.”
That mattered.
And my father knew it too.
Destroy his life had never meant destroy innocent people with him.
Martin explained that Halston would not recklessly collapse Pierce Capital.
Existing projects would be reviewed.
Essential payroll and viable operations could be protected if independent management cooperated.
Kyle, however, would no longer receive special protection.
That distinction terrified him more than instant ruin.
For years, he had mistaken a safety net for talent alone.
Now he would have to discover what remained when the net disappeared.
Thalia moved toward the door again.
Kyle did not stop her this time.
Before leaving, she turned toward me.
Her earlier smile was gone.
“I didn’t know,” she said.
I looked at her.
“You knew he was married.”
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
There was nothing useful left to say.
Security escorted her out.
Kyle remained in the foyer.
He looked suddenly smaller beneath the chandelier.
Martin informed him that temporary arrangements had been made for him to collect personal items under supervision.
Any dispute over marital assets would proceed through attorneys.
Kyle barely seemed to hear him.
He kept looking at me.
Finally he said, “Was any of it real?”
The question surprised me.
Not because I did not know the answer.
Because it was the first honest question he had asked all night.
“Yes,” I said.
“That’s why this hurts.”
His eyes dropped.
I continued.
“I loved you before the loans.
Before the houses.
Before anyone called you brilliant.
I asked my father to help because I believed what you could become mattered more than whether you knew I helped.”
Kyle swallowed.
“And now?”
“Now you get to find out who you are without me protecting you from yourself.”
He had no answer.
Security escorted him upstairs.
An ambulance arrived soon afterward.
Martin insisted I be examined.
The injuries were treated, photographed, and documented.
A police report followed.
This time nobody called it discipline.
Nobody called me hysterical.
The following week moved quickly.
Pierce Capital’s board convened an emergency session.
The refinancing was not automatically canceled, but the terms changed dramatically.
Independent oversight was imposed.
Several directors who had tolerated Kyle’s behavior when they believed him untouchable became much less loyal once they realized how dependent his empire had been on outside support.
Kyle was placed on temporary leave while the board reviewed company governance and financial representations.
