Chapter 4 — He Told Me to Hide the Bruises Before His Mother Arrived

4.9Editorial score

He had not asked what the transcript contained.

He had asked where it came from.

Marjorie looked at him.

“What did you say?”

Adrian picked up the pages.

His hands trembled.

The transcript came from a legally obtained recording Daniel had secured during his investigation.

It documented a conversation Adrian believed was private, one in which he described how easily he could force me out of the house if I resisted him.

He had bragged that everything was in his name.

It wasn’t.

He had bragged that I had nowhere to go.

I did.

He had bragged that I would never challenge him because I was “too scared to make a scene.”

That sentence was underlined.

Marjorie read over his shoulder.

Her mouth tightened.

“You told people that?”

Adrian threw the pages down.

“You hired someone to spy on me?”

I met his eyes.

“I hired someone to find out what you were doing with our money.”

That was when the real panic appeared.

Not at the photographs.

Not at the recording.

At the word money.

My accountant’s report was the next section in the folder.

For almost a year, Adrian had been moving funds from a joint investment account into accounts I did not recognize.

Small transfers at first.

Then larger ones.

He had told me market losses explained the shrinking balance.

They didn’t.

The transfers led to an account connected to a company controlled by Marjorie.

I turned the page toward her.

Her name appeared beside the company registration.

Marjorie’s face went blank.

Adrian looked at her.

That surprised me.

Not because he was angry.

Because he looked betrayed.

“You said that account was closed.”

Marjorie’s composure cracked.

“This is not the place to discuss private family finances.”

“Apparently it became family finances when my money entered your company,” I said.

She stood.

“Your money? Everything you have came through Adrian.”

Elena removed another document from her case.

“Actually, a substantial portion of the funds originated from Claire’s premarital assets.”

Marjorie looked at me as though she had never seen me before.

For years, I had allowed Adrian to handle most of our routine finances.

I had trusted him.

That trust had become his favorite weapon.

But the assets I brought into the marriage had never disappeared.

They had grown.

My accountant had traced the movement carefully enough to separate assumption from fact.

Adrian sat down.

“This is a misunderstanding.”
