Chapter 3 — He Signed Away His Family—Then Sarah Opened the Medical Report

4.9Editorial score

“Discovery.

Full disclosure.

Depositions.

He will have to explain every transfer under oath.”

“And the settlement?”

“The custody provisions remain in effect.

The financial portion can be reopened because his disclosures appear materially false.”

I looked at the closed bedroom door where my children were sleeping.

“Is he going to lose everything?”

“No,” Harrison said.

“He is going to lose the ability to decide alone what belongs to everyone.”

That distinction mattered.

I had not asked Harrison to destroy Bradley.

I wanted the children protected, the hidden assets identified, and the years I had spent helping build our life acknowledged.

Bradley had created the rest himself.

I hesitated before asking about the medical reports.

“Harrison, what happened at the clinic?”

“The clinic confirmed both reports were genuine.

Bradley apparently appeared there with Tiffany and demanded a third test immediately.”

“Can a new test change the old results?”

“It can provide more information.

It cannot rewrite what he knew six months ago.”

That was the part I could not understand.

Bradley had seen the second report.

He had folded it, copied it, and left it in the printer tray.

Yet when Tiffany told him she was pregnant, he announced it to his family as proof that fate had finally rewarded him.

He had not questioned her because the lie gave him what he wanted: a new family, a younger woman who admired him, and a story in which leaving his wife and children looked like destiny rather than betrayal.

Tiffany’s pregnancy made his cruelty feel justified.

He needed it to be true.

The following morning, Brittany called.

She did not begin with an accusation.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

I sat beside the flat’s kitchen window with a cup of coffee cooling between my hands.

“For what?”

“For yesterday.

For sending that message.

For believing everything Bradley said about you.”

“What did he say?”

“That you were taking the children to punish him.

That you had refused every fair offer.

That there was no money because you spent it.”

I looked at the rain sliding down the glass.

“Did you believe him?”

“Yes.” Her voice cracked.

“Mom still does, or says she does.”

“And Tiffany?”

There was a pause.

“She admitted she knew about the second medical report.”

My fingers tightened around the cup.

“How?”

“She found it in his apartment before she announced the pregnancy.

Bradley says she told him the doctors had been too pessimistic.”

“And now?”

“He demanded a prenatal paternity test.

She agreed after he threatened to end the relationship.”

I felt no victory.
