A murmur moved through the family.
Grant’s face went still.
That phrase was almost identical to the one in William’s statement.
Vanessa realized it too late.
She tried to recover.
“You were miserable.
Everyone saw it.
Savannah was always leaving, always choosing duty, always—”
“I had not even entered active service when you arranged that room,” I said.
Vanessa glared at me.
Grant stepped between us.
“No.
Look at me.”
She did.
“Did you make me believe my wife was cheating on me?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled, but the tears did not soften what she said next.
“I gave you a reason to see what was already wrong.”
Grant stared at her.
“You gave me a lie.”
“You chose to believe it.”
The words landed harder than anything else she had said.
Because they were cruel.
And because they were partly true.
Grant looked at me then.
I could see the moment he understood that Vanessa’s deception did not erase his responsibility.
She had created the trap.
He had stepped into it willingly.
He had chosen certainty over a conversation with his wife.
He had chosen humiliation over patience.
He had chosen divorce before the full truth could catch up with the accusation.
And five children had grown up without him because of those choices.
Grant looked down at Ethan.
“How old are you?” he asked softly.
Ethan looked at me before answering.
I gave him a small nod.
He told Grant.
Grant swallowed.
Then he looked at the others.
Noah’s guarded stare.
Luke’s clenched jaw.
Rose still holding Emma’s hand.
They were no longer abstract consequences.
They were standing in front of him.
“My God,” he whispered.
Vanessa tried once more.
“Grant, you cannot let her walk in here after ten years and turn everyone against me.”
I answered before he could.
“I didn’t turn anyone against you.”
I pointed toward the documents.
“You did that when you created something you hoped would never be examined.”
She looked around desperately.
No one stepped beside her.
The same relatives who had whispered when my children arrived now avoided her eyes.
Grant folded his father’s statement with deliberate care.
“Leave.”
Vanessa blinked.
