Ethan stared at the uncashed check as though the paper had changed the temperature of the room.

His father’s signature stretched across the bottom in black ink.

The amount—$120,000,000—was printed above it.

Beside the check lay an ultrasound image showing four tiny shapes and a date from five years earlier.

The ballroom had gone so quiet that I could hear one of my daughters breathing beside me.

Ethan lifted the ultrasound with trembling fingers.

“What is this?” he asked.

Victor stepped forward.

“A stunt.

Put it down.”

Ethan did not look at him.

I rested my hands on the shoulders of the two children nearest me.

“It was taken the morning your father called me into his office.”

Ethan’s eyes moved from the image to the four children.

He counted them without meaning to.

I watched the realization arrive slowly, then all at once.

“No,” he whispered.

Victor seized the edge of the table.

“You do not know that they are his.”

One of my sons flinched at the sharpness in his voice.

I crouched immediately.

“You’re safe,” I told him.

When I stood again, Ethan was looking at his father with an expression I had never seen before.

“You knew she was pregnant?” he asked.

Victor’s answer came too quickly.

“Of course not.”

“He didn’t,” I said.

“I never told him.”

Victor turned toward me, relieved for half a second.

Then I continued.

“But he made sure I could not tell you.”

I removed the next documents from the folder.

There were copies of emails I had sent, call logs from the weeks after I left, and three letters returned unopened from Ethan’s Seattle address.

Ethan picked up the first envelope.

His name was written across it in my handwriting.

A red mark showed that delivery had been refused.

“I never saw this.”

“I sent three.”

“I never saw any of them.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“Because she had already accepted the agreement.”

Ethan finally looked at him.

“You told me she took the money and left without a word.”

My chest tightened.

I had spent five years wondering whether Ethan had chosen his family’s fortune over me.

Now I heard the lie that had been handed to him.

“What did you tell her?” Ethan asked.

Victor said nothing.

I answered instead.

“He said you understood what was expected of you.

He said you had chosen your family and would recover once I was gone.”

“That is not what happened.” Ethan’s voice broke.

“I came to your apartment.

It was empty.

My father said you had demanded money and moved overseas.”

“I was in a hotel twenty miles away.”
