Chapter 5 — He Packed in the Dark While My Daughter Wouldn’t Wake

4.9Editorial score

A judge issued a long-term protective order.

The transferred money was frozen before he could reach it.

Much of it was eventually returned to Alyssa.

The divorce took longer, but the outcome was no longer controlled by the story he had been telling about her.

Alyssa sold the house.

She said she could not sleep in a room where her pillow had become an evidence bag.

For a while, she and Lily stayed with me.

Lily refused to sleep behind a closed door, so we kept the hallway light on and placed a small bell on my bedroom handle.

She wanted to know that she could reach me without making another midnight call.

Alyssa recovered physically before she recovered emotionally.

She often apologized for not telling me sooner.

One evening, while Lily worked at the kitchen table, Alyssa said, “I kept thinking I needed perfect proof before I asked for help.

I thought no one would believe me if I only had fear.”

I took her hand.

“You did ask for help,” I said.

“You wrote my name on that note.

Lily made the call.

Both of you kept reaching for a door he was trying to close.”

Across the room, Lily placed her pink backpack beside her chair.

It was zipped now, with every book inside.

She looked up at us.

“Grandma?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Can we leave the porch light on tonight?”

Alyssa glanced at me, and for the first time since the hospital, her smile reached her eyes.

“We can leave it on every night,” she said.

So we did.

Not because we were waiting for danger, but because darkness would never again be mistaken for silence in our family.
