Chapter 3 — He Ordered Me Out—But My Father’s Deed Hid One Detail

4.9Editorial score

No familiar roof.

Only bare earth, fresh tire tracks, and empty sky.

Ethan walked several steps onto the property.

Then several more.

He turned in a full circle.

For a moment, he actually looked confused rather than angry, as though the house might be hidden behind something.

Sienna said something to him that I couldn’t hear.

He didn’t answer.

Then he saw my car.

His face changed.

He crossed the distance quickly.

I stepped out before he reached me but stayed beside the driver’s door.

“Where is the house?” he demanded.

I had imagined that question many times.

In every imaginary version, I had a clever answer.

When the real moment came, I didn’t need one.

“Relocated.”

He stared at me.

“You moved the house?”

“Yes.”

“You can’t do that.”

I opened the folder I had brought with me.

“Gloria says otherwise.”

That name meant nothing to him yet.

“Who the hell is Gloria?”

“My attorney.”

The word attorney changed his posture before he could hide it.

Behind him, Sienna had started walking toward us.

Ethan’s parents remained closer to the vehicle.

The children stood between both groups, caught in a situation they had not created and clearly didn’t understand.

I hated that they were witnessing it.

But I also remembered Ethan’s message.

Don’t embarrass yourself.

The kids are traveling with us.

He had used their presence as leverage against me.

I wasn’t going to use them against him.

So I kept my voice low.

“You told me to be gone before you came home,” I said.

“I didn’t tell you to take the house.”

“You didn’t own the land it was sitting on.”

He laughed once, sharply.

It wasn’t amusement.

It was disbelief looking for somewhere to stand.

“We’re married.”

“We’re divorcing.”

“That property is ours.”

I removed the county record and held it where he could take it without me stepping closer.

He snatched the page.

His eyes moved across it.

I watched the exact second he reached the ownership line.

His expression emptied.

“Natalie Caldwell,” I said quietly.

“Only Natalie Caldwell.”

Sienna had reached his side now.

“What does that mean?”

Ethan didn’t answer her.
