Underneath were four small holes and a rectangle of brick that had not faded with the rest.

That evening, I carried my father’s folder onto the porch.

The corners were worn now.

Gloria had scanned every page, but I kept the originals in the same labeled envelopes Arthur had used.

Chloe sat beside me with two mugs of coffee.

She placed one in my hands the way I used to place one in my father’s.

“Do you think Grandpa knew this would happen?” she asked.

He told me to disappear because he believed the house, the children and the story all belonged to him.

The house left first.

The lie followed.

I stayed.
