He gave no explanation.

Marco arrived forty minutes later.

He stepped into the apartment, saw Emily, George, the photograph, and the open box, then wisely asked no questions.

The attorney examined the documents while every page was copied.

Several records contained matching transaction numbers from ledgers still stored beneath Trattoria Romano.

Others showed that Dominic had forged Maria’s approval on transfers that emptied an account inherited from her parents.

One envelope contained a small brass key and the number of a bank box.

By midnight, the attorney had confirmed that the box still existed.

By nine the next morning, Luca stood inside a private viewing room while the attorney opened it.

The contents removed the last possibility that Maria had invented her fears.

There were original account statements, photographs of Dominic meeting men he later claimed not to know, and a notarized declaration Maria had prepared shortly before escaping.

She described the forged signatures, the threats against Luca, and the locations of duplicate business records.

There was also one final letter addressed to Dominic.

Luca did not open it.

He called his father and asked him to come to the restaurant after closing.

Dominic arrived at ten that night wearing a charcoal coat and the expression of a man accustomed to entering rooms he already owned.

He found Luca seated in the same corner booth where Emily had been humiliated.

George sat at a nearby table.

Emily stood beside him in her own clothes, not the undersized uniform.

Marco guarded the locked front door.

The dented metal box rested in front of Luca.

Dominic saw Maria’s photograph and stopped.

Only for a second.

Then he smiled.

“So that’s what this is,” he said.

“Some waitress found old garbage and convinced you it was treasure.”

Emily’s face remained calm.

Luca placed copies of the forged records on the table.

Dominic barely glanced at them.

“Your mother was unstable.”

“You told me she left with another man.”

“She told many stories.”

“You told me she never tried to contact me.”

“She didn’t.”

Luca arranged the returned birthday letters in a line.

Dominic’s smile thinned.

“You believe these people over your own father?”

Luca reached beneath the table and pressed the recorder’s play button.

Maria’s voice filled the empty restaurant.

Dominic listened for six seconds before lunging toward the machine.

Marco stepped between them.

That single movement exposed more than any confession could have.

Dominic pointed at Emily.

“She wants money.

People like her always want something.”

Emily looked down at herself, then back at him.

“Your son said almost the same thing yesterday.”

Luca absorbed the sentence without defending himself.

Dominic turned on him.

“You are going to throw away everything I built because a fat waitress learned a recipe?”

“No,” Luca said.

“I’m ending what you built because my mother left proof.”

He slid Maria’s sealed letter across the table.

Dominic stared at his name on the envelope.

For the first time, fear reached his eyes.

He refused to open it.
