Chapter 2 — He Locked His Pregnant Wife In, Then Heard His Own Voice

4.9Editorial score

They asked what happened from the beginning.

They asked about the doctor’s warning.

They asked whether Ethan knew about my blood pressure.

They asked whether he had access to the lock from his phone.

I answered everything.

I did not embellish.

I did not scream.

I had spent years being told I was dramatic, too sensitive, too needy, too willing to ruin special moments.

So I gave them times, names, words, and proof.

The prenatal appointment summary was in my medical portal.

It stated the risk clearly.

Ethan had signed as my emergency contact.

The smart-lock company had a log showing the front door was locked remotely from his phone one minute after he left the house.

The alarm system had recorded the back door armed.

The 911 call had captured my voice and his words, because Patricia’s call had still been on speaker when he shouted at me.

That was the detail he forgot.

He had loved speakerphone.

He liked an audience when he corrected me.

He liked Patricia hearing him put me in my place.

That night, the audience became evidence.

The officer in the nursery doorway watched Ethan’s face change as the pieces landed.

“Where is Madison?” Ethan asked finally.

His voice was hoarse, but not from grief.

From fear.

“She is alive,” the officer said.

Patricia grabbed the counter.

“And the baby?”

No one answered her right away.

That silence punished them more than any sentence could have.

Ethan stepped forward.

“I need to go to the hospital.”

“You need to remain where you are,” the officer replied.

Patricia straightened instantly.

The old arrogance came back because fear had embarrassed her.

“This is absurd.

My son did not do anything criminal.

Madison has always exaggerated.

She wanted attention because it was my birthday.”

The officer looked at her.

“Mrs.

Walker, your voice is also on the recording.”

Patricia blinked.

The recording shifted.

Her sigh floated through the room, elegant and cruel.

“Don’t tell me Madison is pulling one of her stunts again.

If you miss my champagne toast, Ethan, I will be humiliated.”

For the first time since I had known her, Patricia had no polished answer.

Ethan tried to recover.

“I didn’t know it was serious.”

The officer turned a page in the folder.

“Your wife told you she was bleeding.”

“She says things when she panics.”

“Your doctor’s written instructions were sent to both of you.”

“I didn’t read every message.”

“You attended the appointment.”

Ethan looked at Patricia, as if his mother could still step in and make the world behave the way it always had around her.
