Chapter 3 — He Left His Newborn to Freeze—Then His Wedding Doors Locked

4.9Editorial score

He stood beside volunteer search posters.

He thanked strangers for their prayers.

He even returned to the mountain pass with cameras nearby and placed flowers near the road.

I watched that recording from a secure recovery room with Lily sleeping on my chest.

Victor told the reporter, “I just want my girls home.”

I turned off the television.

That was the closest I came to losing control.

Not because he lied.

Because he had practiced.

Every pause.

Every lowered glance.

Every tremble in his voice.

He had prepared to become a widower before I ever stepped into the SUV.

Three weeks later, he stopped pretending privately.

Intercepted financial activity showed renewed movement in the offshore accounts.

Then Vanessa moved into a property Victor controlled.

Soon after that, they announced a small wedding.

The speed shocked everyone who believed his public grief.

Victor explained it as two devastated people finding comfort in each other.

Investigators heard something else.

Urgency.

The company audit was tightening.

Several accounts had become difficult to access.

Victor needed to consolidate funds before scrutiny increased.

The wedding offered the perfect cover: wealthy guests, private security, rented technical equipment, and a dedicated network for vendors and remote family members.

Victor assumed nobody would look twice at encrypted traffic during a private ceremony.

He was wrong.

Back in the chapel, the agent placed the first document down and lifted another.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I don’t know anything about those transfers.”

Victor turned on her immediately.

“Stop talking.”

The guests heard him.

So did the agents.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Until that moment, she had still been standing beside him as his bride.

Now she looked like someone realizing she might also be his shield.

The agent said, “Ms.

Hale, no one asked you a question.”

She swallowed.

Victor stepped forward.

“This ceremony is over.

Everyone leave.”

No one moved.

The chapel doors remained secured under federal authority.

“You cannot detain an entire room because my unstable wife appears after disappearing for six weeks,” Victor said.

There it was.

The word he had chosen before the mountain.

Unstable.

He had planned to use my postpartum condition as part of the story.

I shifted Lily higher on my shoulder.

“She didn’t disappear,” said a voice from the rear pew.

A man stood.

Victor did not recognize him.

I did.

Daniel Reeves, the leader of the search-and-rescue team.
