That made anger harder, not easier.
Elena’s phone vibrated.
She glanced down, then looked at Nathan.
“The board chair wants the meeting moved to ten.”
Nathan nodded.
I stared at him.
“Board meeting?”
“They want an explanation.”
“About me?”
“About my conduct.”
There was a distinction in his wording, deliberate and protective.
I noticed it.
Elena opened another folder.
“Nathan has already agreed to remove himself from any decision involving your compensation, title, promotion, performance review, or reporting structure for as long as a personal relationship exists between you.”
I blinked.
“Already?”
“At six forty this morning,” she said.
“Before the board requested it.”
Nathan’s eyes stayed on me.
“Your career cannot depend on whether you trust me personally.”
Something in my chest shifted.
That sentence reached the exact fear I had never said aloud.
I had spent years worried about men wanting something from me.
I had never imagined having to worry that affection itself could contaminate work I had earned.
“And if I decide I don’t want this?” I asked.
Nathan answered immediately.
“Then nothing happens to your job.
Nothing happens to your opportunities.
And I don’t pursue you again.”
Harper exhaled softly behind me.
I studied Nathan’s face, searching for resentment.
There was none.
Only tension.
And fear.
It startled me to recognize it.
Nathan Carter, the billionaire CEO who made entire rooms nervous by walking into them, was afraid of my answer.
Elena’s phone vibrated again.
This time she frowned.
“There’s more.”
Nathan looked at her.
She placed the phone on the table but kept the screen angled away from me.
“A message is circulating among several senior employees.
It claims Maya’s upcoming leadership consideration was personally ordered by you after the two of you became involved.”
My face went hot.
“That’s false.”
“We know,” Elena said.
“The dated records prove it.”
I reopened the folder.
The succession memo suddenly felt less like paperwork and more like armor.
“Who sent the message?”
“We’re tracing that now.”
Nathan’s voice hardened.
“No retaliation without evidence.”
Elena gave him a pointed look.
“I wasn’t proposing retaliation.”
For the first time that morning, Harper almost smiled.
