She knew Dad folded the same sweaters in the same drawer every winter.
She knew Mom kept Dad’s anniversary cards in the cedar box beside the bed.
She knew how much this house meant to them because she had watched Mom cry when I handed over the keys.
And she had helped pack their bedroom anyway.
I turned the deed fully around so both of them could see it.
“You have no ownership interest in this property.”
Craig’s face hardened.
“I know what the page says.”
“Good.”
I closed the folder.
“Then this becomes very simple.”
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“What are you doing?”
“Giving you the instruction you gave Mom and Dad.”
I pointed toward the front door.
“Pack your things and leave.”
Craig barked out a laugh.
“No.”
Dad inhaled sharply.
Vanessa stared at me.
I did not repeat myself louder.
I did not need to.
“You came here as guests,” I said.
“That invitation is over.”
Craig stepped closer.
“You think because you have money you can control everybody?”
There it was.
The story he needed in order to make himself the injured person.
I had seen versions of it before.
A person crosses a line, gets stopped, then suddenly the boundary itself becomes the offense.
“This isn’t about money.”
“You bought them a four-hundred-thousand-dollar house.”
“Four hundred twenty-five thousand.”
His nostrils flared.
“And now you’re holding it over everyone.”
“No.
I’m holding the deed to a house you tried to steal from my parents by intimidation.”
Vanessa gasped.
“Steal? That’s ridiculous.”
“Then explain why Dad’s clothes are in a box.”
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
“Explain why Mom was afraid to talk to me on the phone.”
Her eyes moved toward Mom.
“Explain why Craig was shouting that this was his house.”
Craig stepped in again.
“I said we’re staying.
That’s different.”
“It sounded very clear from the doorway.”
He looked toward the windows as though he wanted another audience.
There wasn’t one.
His sons had apparently gone down to the beach.
For that, at least, I was grateful.
They did not need to stand in the middle of what their parents had created.
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
“Ethan, can we talk privately?”
