Chapter 3 — He Came Home to Bruises, Forged Signatures, and Champagne

The next morning, they returned with more papers.

When Elena refused again, Ricardo shoved her against the kitchen counter.

She stopped speaking and pressed her lips together.

I wanted to tell her she did not have to continue, but the operator’s calm voice asked whether she was safe enough to finish.

Elena looked at me.

This time, I did not see permission in her eyes.

I saw a decision.

“Yes,” she said.

“I want to finish.”

She described weeks of threats, locked doors, confiscated phones, and documents placed in front of her while Victoria repeated that no one would believe a wife over a mother and brother.

They told her I would think she had stolen from me.

They told her I would leave her.

Whenever she resisted, Ricardo reminded her that nobody knew what happened inside our home.

He had believed that.

Now an emergency operator was hearing every word.

Sirens approached in the distance.

Victoria straightened her shoulders.

“This is absurd,” she said.

“She is unstable.

She bruises easily, and she has been confused for months.”

“Then why were her accounts transferred to Ricardo’s company?” I asked.

“Because someone responsible had to protect them.”

“Why is my signature on documents I never saw?”

“You authorized us verbally.”

“When?”

She hesitated.

“Before you left.”

“Where?”

“Here.

At dinner.”

Ricardo interrupted her.

“No.

He called from overseas.”

They looked at each other.

Their stories had broken apart in less than ten seconds.

Blue light flashed across the bedroom wall.

Ricardo moved toward the hallway.

I blocked the doorway without touching him.

“You cannot hold me here,” he said.

“I’m not holding you.

I’m asking you to stay and explain why you are wearing my watch.”

He looked down at his wrist.

The watch suddenly seemed heavier.

Victoria began gathering the documents from the bed.

Elena reached out and placed her palm on the folder.

Victoria froze.

It was a small act, but I knew what it cost her.

“Those are mine,” Elena said.

“They belong to the company,” Victoria replied.

“They contain my forced signatures.”

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Two officers entered and separated us.

One remained with Victoria and Ricardo while the other knelt several feet from Elena, spoke softly, and asked whether she needed medical attention.

Elena nodded.

Victoria immediately began performing the role she had prepared for months.

She said Elena was emotionally unstable.
