Chapter 6 — He Came Home From His Mistress to an Empty Crib and a Court Folder

4.9Editorial score

I want reliable access to transportation and money needed for his care.

I want decisions concerning him handled responsibly.

And I want a judge to see exactly what happened before anyone pressures me to pretend it didn’t.”

Vivian scoffed.

“So this is about money.”

I looked at her.

“No.

Money became evidence the moment I was stranded with a sick newborn and no wallet.”

Daniel sat heavily on the edge of the nursery chair.

For the first time, the vacation tan made him look ridiculous rather than enviable.

“Where is Noah right now?” he asked again.

“With my sister, under the arrangement my attorney discussed with the court.

He was discharged this morning.”

Daniel’s eyes closed.

Discharged.

The word hit him harder than every accusation had.

“He’s okay?”

“He’s recovering.”

His voice dropped.

“Can I see him?”

“You can follow the temporary order and speak to your attorney.”

He looked up at me with something close to hatred.

Then Celeste spoke from the stairs.

“You should have answered your phone.”

Daniel turned toward her.

She shook her head.

“You told me she was calling because she was jealous.”

Vivian’s face went rigid.

Daniel stood.

“Celeste, stop.”

“No.”

The word surprised all of us.

She swallowed.

“You said Grace was trying to ruin the trip.

You said the baby was fine.”

Daniel’s eyes flicked toward me.

I did not react.

Celeste continued.

“You saw her calls.”

“Enough.”

“You put your phone on airplane mode at dinner because you said you were tired of her calling.”

The room changed.

Until that moment, I had proof that Daniel failed to answer.

Now there was a witness who had watched him choose not to.

Vivian understood before he did.

“Celeste,” she said carefully, “you’re upset.

You shouldn’t say things you don’t fully understand.”

Celeste laughed without humor.

“I understand exactly what I saw.”

Daniel moved toward her.

She stepped back.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

I picked up my folder.

There was nothing else I needed from that room.

The hearing took place three days later.
