“No game.”
“You deliberately concealed your involvement in this transaction.”
“I did no such thing.”
“You sat in my house while my company negotiated with yours and never said a word.”
“You never asked what I did beyond making jokes about it.”
Silence.
Quinn looked down.
William recovered quickly.
“This is business.
Whatever happened last night is personal.”
“You made a judgment about my intelligence, judgment, background, and character in front of your business partners.”
“I made a comment.”
“You made several.”
“And now you’re jeopardizing hundreds of jobs because your feelings were hurt?”
There it was.
The move I had expected.
Not regret.
Not apology.
Leverage through shame.
I leaned against the counter.
“No employees are losing their jobs because I requested a review.”
“You know what happens if this deal collapses.”
“I know exactly what happens.
I also know your company represented to ours that executive conduct posed no material risk to ongoing negotiations.”
His breathing changed.
“Don’t hide behind legal language.”
“I’m not hiding.”
Quinn lifted his eyes to mine.
William continued, louder now.
“You think because you made some money you belong at my level?”
Quinn flinched.
I did not.
“Last night you called me garbage because you believed I had none.
This morning you’re angry because you discovered I have enough to matter.
Neither opinion tells me anything about myself, William.”
He went silent.
Then Quinn spoke.
“Dad, I’m here.”
The silence on the line became heavier.
William’s voice dropped.
“Come home.”
“No.”
“This has nothing to do with you.”
“It had everything to do with me when you used me to humiliate her.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?” Quinn asked.
“A woman you thought was poor?”
William hung up.
By noon, two of the dinner guests had contacted me.
One apologized for saying nothing.
The other did not apologize at all.
He was one of William’s business partners, and his message was more interesting.
He told Danielle he was available to answer questions about Harrington’s recent internal decisions if our review required it.
I asked Danielle to schedule the call.
What followed had nothing to do with revenge.
It was worse for William than revenge because it was documented.
