Chapter 5 — He Brought His Mistress to the Shower—Audrey Had One White Box Waiting

They had been preparation.

“You’re divorcing me over this?”

Audrey almost laughed at the word this.

As if betrayal were a single afternoon.

As if there had not been months of lies, guarded phones, invented trips, shared money spent in secret, and a woman brought into the garden where they were celebrating the birth of his child.

“I’m divorcing you because I know what my marriage is now.”

Matthew’s voice dropped.

“And you think you’re walking away with everything?”

There it was.

The language he trusted most.

Ownership.

Audrey shook her head.

“No.

The lawyers will handle what belongs to whom.

Diana has preserved the financial records.

You will have every opportunity to explain every expense.”

The investor near the champagne table spoke again.

“So will we.”

Matthew turned toward him.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

“If personal expenses were passed through projects we funded, it does.”

“They weren’t.”

Diana said nothing.

Her silence was worse.

Another business associate quietly took out his phone, then seemed to remember where he was and slipped it back into his pocket.

Matthew noticed every movement.

His public confidence was collapsing by inches.

He looked at Audrey with naked fury.

“You invited my investors here for this.”

“I invited the same people you wanted here.

You gave them your speech.”

“You planned to humiliate me.”

“I planned to stop helping you lie.”

That silenced him.

Audrey looked toward the white box.

For three months, she had thought of it as a detonator.

Standing there now, she realized demolition had never been the point.

A controlled demolition was not destruction for its own sake.

It was what happened when a structure was too compromised to save safely.

You cleared the area.

You identified the load points.

You made certain innocent people would not be underneath when it fell.

Then you stopped pretending cracks were cosmetic.

Matthew’s mistress walked toward Audrey.

Matthew caught her wrist.

“Where are you going?”

She pulled free.

“Home.”

“We need to talk.”

“You told me your marriage was finished months ago.”

Audrey met her eyes.

The woman looked ashamed.

“He told me you were staying together publicly until after the baby came,” she said.

“He said you both agreed.”

Audrey believed that Matthew had lied to her.

Whether the woman had believed every part of it was no longer Audrey’s problem.
