“But I can change what happens next.”

Audrey studied him.

There it was again.

The executive instinct.

Find the damaged system.

Create a recovery plan.

Negotiate the outcome.

“What happens next for you is your responsibility,” she said.

“What happens next for Maya and the baby is something the two of you will have to handle honestly.”

“And us?”

“There is no us.”

His face tightened.

“You don’t mean that.”

“I signed the papers.”

“People sign things when they’re angry.”

“I prepared them months before I knew Maya was pregnant.”

That silenced him.

Audrey continued.

“I wasn’t angry when I prepared them.

I was afraid I was disappearing inside our marriage.”

Zayn stared at her.

For the first time, the folder on the dining table made sense in a way he had resisted.

She had not destroyed their marriage in one dramatic morning.

She had simply stopped pretending it was still whole.

“I loved you,” he said.

Audrey’s expression softened, but not enough to give him hope.

“I believe you did.”

“Did?”

“Yes.”

He looked away.

That single word wounded him more than anger would have.

He tried another argument.

“What about everything we built?”

Audrey glanced toward the window.

“I’m keeping what I built.”

Starlight Jewelry had begun as sketches she made at a small desk long before Zayn became CEO.

He had supported her in those early years, and she would never erase that truth simply because their marriage had failed.

But the business was hers.

Her talent was hers.

Her future was hers.

She did not need to destroy Zayn financially to leave him.

She only needed to stop giving him access to the life she had built around their marriage.

Zayn swallowed.

“I thought you needed me.”

Audrey looked directly at him.

“I needed you to be my husband.”

He had no answer.

The divorce moved forward.

There was no dramatic courtroom spectacle, no public revenge, no attempt by Audrey to punish Maya for carrying the child.

When Zayn’s mother eventually learned what had happened, she called Audrey.

Her first words were an apology.

Audrey almost ended the conversation anyway.

Then the older woman said something Audrey had never expected.

“I spent years making you feel responsible for something you couldn’t control.”

Audrey closed her eyes.

“Yes,” she said.
