Chapter 6 — He Abandoned Nora—Then She Arrived Pregnant and Dying on His Operating Table

Caleb did not defend himself.

Nora watched him as though waiting for the excuse that had always followed apologies from powerful people.

None came.

“The messages were forged,” he said.

“The records were altered.

My parents admitted enough tonight that independent counsel is reviewing everything.”

Nora’s face barely moved.

“I told you.”

Three words.

They hurt more than any accusation could have.

“You did.”

“I begged you.”

“I know.”

“You looked at me like I was disgusting.”

Caleb swallowed.

“I remember.”

Her voice trembled now, not from weakness alone.

“Do you know what that did to me? You were the person I trusted most.

Your parents hated me, and I could survive that.

But you believed them so quickly that eventually I started wondering whether you had ever known me at all.”

Caleb’s eyes lowered.

“I don’t have an answer that makes that smaller.”

Nora studied him.

“Are you expecting me to forgive you because you saved my life?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“Are you expecting gratitude?”

“For the surgery? No.

I was your doctor.

You needed help.”

“And for finding out your parents lied?”

“That truth belongs to you.

It always did.”

For the first time, Nora’s expression shifted.

Not forgiveness.

Surprise.

Caleb moved toward the door.

“I’ll make sure another surgeon continues your care unless you request otherwise.

You won’t have to see me again.”

“Caleb.”

He stopped.

Nora looked at the bracelet resting beside the envelope.

Someone had returned it with her belongings.

She touched it with one finger.

“Do you know why I kept this?”

Caleb shook his head.

“For a long time, I thought keeping it meant I still loved you.”

He said nothing.

“Then I realized I kept it because I needed proof that I hadn’t imagined who you were before that night.”

That was almost worse.

Caleb looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

Nora’s eyes remained on him.

“I know you are.”

It was not absolution.

But it was the first thing she had given him that he had not demanded.
