Chapter 2 — Grandmother Trashed Her Cake—Then Harper Connected the Tablet

4.9Editorial score

“Mom, she’s eight.”

“And already learning how to manipulate both of you.”

Bennett sighed on the recording.

“Just ease up a little.”

There it was again.

A little.

Not stop.

Not leave her alone.

Not you will never speak to my daughter that way again.

Just ease up.

The video shifted as Harper moved behind the partially open bedroom door.

Her breathing was audible.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“You always wanted a child who would make this family proud.

Instead, you let your wife celebrate mediocrity.”

Bennett said nothing for several seconds.

Then he answered, “I don’t want another fight.”

Evelyn’s response landed harder than anything she had said that morning.

“Then stop listening when Harper complains.”

The recording ended.

Every person in the room looked at Bennett.

His face had lost all color.

Harper stood beside the television with the tablet pressed against her chest.

She was not watching Evelyn anymore.

She was watching her father.

“You heard her,” Harper said.

Bennett opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“You heard me tell you,” she continued.

“You told me Grandma was trying to help.”

“I didn’t know she was destroying your work.”

“But you knew she called me things.”

The words were not shouted.

That made them worse.

Bennett looked down.

“Yes.”

A classmate’s mother quietly guided two children toward the living room, but Harper shook her head.

“They can stay,” she said.

“Grandma wanted everyone to see me get punished.”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“This spectacle is exactly what I warned you about.

She recorded private family conversations.

She has no respect for anyone.”

I turned toward her.

“She recorded the person nobody believed would hurt her.”

“I was correcting her.”

“You were isolating her.”

Evelyn pointed at the screen.

“You have no context.

She leaves out everything she does wrong.”

Harper unlocked the tablet again.

“I saved the whole videos.”

Evelyn’s confidence slipped.

For years, she had depended on the same pattern.

She would say something cruel when I was outside the room, then soften it when confronted.

Harper was sensitive.
