“Is he there?”

“Yes.”

“Lock the door.

The police are already on their way.”

I sat on the bathroom floor with my back against the cabinet.

Outside, Mark’s voice softened.

“Sarah, please.

I made a terrible mistake.

I was scared.

I wasn’t trying to hurt her.”

I stared at the dark line beneath the door.

“You left her there without her medicine.”

“I thought the reaction would pass.”

“You read the label.”

“I wasn’t thinking clearly.”

“She was four.

You were supposed to think for her.”

He stopped answering.

A few minutes later, the doorbell rang.

Mark walked downstairs.

I heard low voices, then a sudden shout.

By the time I opened the bathroom door, two officers were standing in the hallway.

Mark was near the front entrance with his hands visible, insisting there had been a misunderstanding.

One officer remained with me while the other separated him from the house.

I handed over my phone.

The officer watched both recordings without speaking.

When the second one ended, his jaw tightened.

“Do you know where the medication pouch is now?”

I shook my head.

Mark answered from the doorway.

“Claire probably threw it away.

I don’t know.”

That was the first thing he said that made the officers look at each other.

He knew exactly which object they were discussing even though neither of us had described it in front of him.

They took him to the station for questioning that night.

I remained in the house where Ava had eaten her last breakfast.

At dawn, I walked into her bedroom.

Her stuffed rabbit still rested beside her pillow.

The purple crayon she had chosen for her castle lay on the floor near the toy box.

I picked it up and held it until my fingers hurt.

The police investigation moved faster than Mark expected because he had spent five days building lies instead of destroying all the evidence.

Claire was identified from the daycare footage before noon.

Officers found her at her apartment.

The red emergency pouch was inside the trunk of her car beneath a folded blanket.

Ava’s injector was still sealed inside it.

The bakery bag was gone, but Claire’s banking records showed a purchase that morning at a cafe near Mark’s office.

The cafe’s receipt system identified the item as a peanut protein cookie.

Claire initially claimed she had met Mark only to discuss work.

When detectives told her they had audio from the daycare camera, her account changed.

She admitted that she and Mark had been having an affair for nearly a year.

On mornings when I believed Mark was taking Ava directly to daycare, he sometimes met Claire in a quiet parking area first.

Usually Ava stayed buckled in the back seat while they talked.

That Tuesday, Claire had brought coffee and breakfast.

Ava asked for part of Claire’s cookie.

Claire handed her a bite without checking the wrapper.

Within minutes, Ava complained that her lips felt strange.
