Chapter 1 — Derek Chose His “Heir”—Then the Doctor Checked Allison’s File

4.9Editorial score

“Mrs.

Allison Harper… before we continue, can you explain why there is no record anywhere in your file of a confirmed pregnancy?”

Jason told me later that nobody moved.

Not Derek.

Not Sophia.

Not his mother.

Not the aunt holding the flowers or Leah with the blue gift bag sitting uselessly in her lap.

Allison stared at the doctor.

“What do you mean?”

The doctor kept her voice calm.

“I mean this clinic has your intake forms and the records you forwarded, but there is no original laboratory confirmation, no prior ultrasound report from a medical provider, and nothing here that independently confirms the pregnancy you reported.”

Derek gave a short laugh.

It was the kind of laugh people make when reality says something they are not yet willing to hear.

“She’s pregnant,” he said.

“Obviously.

That’s why we’re here.”

The doctor looked back at the monitor.

Allison’s hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.

“Maybe the records didn’t transfer,” she said quickly.

“I went somewhere else before.

A private place.”

“Which provider?”

Allison hesitated.

It was only a second.

But once a room has become suspicious, a second can feel like an admission.

“I don’t remember the doctor’s full name.”

Sophia’s expression changed first.

Jason said she leaned forward and asked, “You don’t remember the doctor who told you that you were pregnant?”

Allison snapped her head toward her.

“I remember the clinic.”

“Then give them the clinic.”

Derek raised a hand.

“Stop.

Everyone stop.”

He turned to the doctor.

“Just tell us what you’re seeing.”

The doctor did not dramatize it.

That made it worse.

She explained that the images in front of her did not match the pregnancy history Allison had provided.

She wanted to repeat the examination and run appropriate testing before making any final statement.

Derek’s mother whispered, “But she said it was a boy.”

The doctor looked at her.

“At this point, I cannot confirm a pregnancy, much less fetal sex.”

That was when the blue gift bag slipped from Leah’s knees and landed sideways on the floor.

Inside my car, miles away, I knew none of those exact words yet.

I only saw Jason’s next message.

Something is wrong.

Anna was watching planes descend beyond the highway barriers.

Alex had fallen quiet against my side.

The envelope of Derek’s financial records rested on my lap.

For months I had believed the ugliest truth in our marriage was the affair.

Then I discovered the money.

Now, while Derek’s family sat inside a clinic built around a celebration, another layer was beginning to peel away.

I did not feel triumphant.

I felt tired.

That distinction mattered to me.
