“You open it,” he said.

I slid the page across the table.
Dante read it once.
Then again.

First steps.”
“I know.”
“No, Elena.
You were there.”
I flinched.
He saw it immediately and exhaled.
“I’m sorry.”
The apology startled both of us.
He looked at the test again.
“I’m angry.”
“I know.”
“But I understand why you ran.”
I stared at him.
“Do you?”
“I understand what you saw.”
He folded the paper once.
“And I understand what I failed to tell you.”
“What?”
“That I was already trying to get out.”
I said nothing.
Dante’s family name had carried weight long before I met him.
I had never asked what leaving that world required because I had assumed men like Dante didn’t leave.
“After you disappeared,” he continued, “I stopped pretending I could keep one life separate from another.
I sold what could be sold.
I handed legitimate businesses to managers.
I cut ties that should’ve been cut years earlier.”
“Why?”
He gave a tired smile.
“At first? Because I thought changing things might make you come back.”
The answer hurt more than I expected.
“And later?”
“Because I realized you weren’t wrong about what my life looked like from your side of the door.”
I thought of the blood on his cuff.
He saw the memory on my face.
“Some things can’t be undone,” he said.
