Chapter 7 — At the Airport, My Son Asked the Question My Husband Couldn’t Answer

4.9Editorial score

Everything had simply ended up in the same place.

Daniel.

The woman.

The beige suitcase.

The unanswered text.

My wedding ring.

Our son.

And me.

For months I had been looking at each piece separately because that was the only way I could keep believing the life I wanted still existed.

Noah put them together in one sentence.

Are you leaving with her because you don’t want to come home with us anymore?

Daniel had called the truth complicated.

Then he had boarded the plane.

That was the answer.

The last time I saw the navy anniversary coat, Daniel was wearing it when he came to pick Noah up for the weekend.

It no longer looked like evidence of the life I had lost.

It was just a coat on a man I used to protect from consequences he had chosen himself.

Noah ran into the hallway carrying his backpack.

Daniel smiled at him.

A real smile this time, though smaller than the one I remembered from the airport.

I handed him Noah’s bag.

Our eyes met.

There were things we still regretted.

Things we still had to manage.

Things neither of us could repair.

But there was no lie standing between us anymore.

I watched the elevator doors close behind them, then stepped back into my apartment and shut the door.

At the airport, I had thought walking away would feel like losing my family.

Instead, the moment I finally understood came much later, in the quiet after that door clicked shut.

I had not walked away from a family.

I had walked away from pretending betrayal was the price of keeping one together.
