Chapter 1 — At 3 A.M., I Discovered What My Son Was Hiding

4.9Editorial score

The bathroom door flew open so hard that the handle struck the wall.

Daniel stood beneath the harsh hallway light with the old phone in his hand.

For half a second, nobody moved.

Emily was behind me, barefoot in her robe.

Her packed bag remained hidden in my bedroom.

I could hear her breathing change the moment she recognized what he was holding.

Daniel lifted the phone between two fingers.

“Whose phone is this?”

His voice was quiet.

That frightened me more than shouting would have.

My own phone was still recording inside the pocket of my robe.

My finger had been hovering over 911 when the door opened, but now I forced myself not to reach for it.

Any sudden movement would tell him exactly what I was doing.

“It’s mine,” I said.

Daniel looked at me.

Then he looked at Emily.

“Really?”

Emily said nothing.

He turned the old phone over in his palm.

“Then why was it under our mattress?”

I felt Emily go rigid behind me.

He had searched their bedroom.

The hidden phone had been our one quiet advantage.

I had given it to Emily because Daniel checked the phone she normally used, watched her accounts, and seemed to know everywhere she went.

Now he had found it.

But he had not found mine.

I kept my voice level.

“Maybe you should give it back.”

Daniel laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Mom, go to bed.”

It was the tone people use with children.

Or with old women they think can be dismissed.

I had heard that tone before.

My husband used it during the worst years of our marriage whenever I asked questions he didn’t want to answer.

He would lower his voice, make me feel foolish, and then act surprised when I eventually doubted myself.

For years, I had mistaken calmness for innocence.

I knew better now.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I said.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Emily whispered, “Please just give me the phone.”

His eyes moved to her.

The smile disappeared.

“Why?”

Emily didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who were you planning to call?”

She backed into the wall.

I moved between them.

“That’s enough.”

He stared at me as if I had suddenly become a stranger in his home.

“You don’t understand what’s happening here.”

“I understand more than you think.”

His face changed then.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.
