That temptation did not disappear simply because Amber had found a little determination.
Sometimes determination looked less like courage and more like sitting at a table at midnight with a headache, staring at documents you did not want to see.
Once, Amber picked up the phone and actually opened Anthony’s contact.
Her finger hovered over the call button.
She imagined saying, “I can’t do this anymore.”
The sentence would have been true.
She couldn’t keep doing it in the same way.
She was exhausted.
But exhaustion was not consent.
Amber closed the contact.
A few days later, the financial issue became impossible to keep separate from the legal case.
Amber formally put forward the practical problem: Anthony’s control over access to financial resources was affecting her ability to participate in the dispute on anything close to equal footing.
She did not present herself as helpless.
She presented dates.
She presented the sequence.
She presented the fact that paid legal representation had ended after she lost access to the resources used to pay for it.
Anthony resisted the way Amber had expected him to.
He did not describe himself as someone trying to trap her.
He described the situation as complicated.
He suggested Amber was exaggerating.
He argued that the relationship itself had created financial confusion and that Amber was now presenting every disagreement in the most damaging possible way.
Amber listened.
Then she returned to the one fact that mattered.
“Do I currently have the access I had before?”
Anthony did not answer directly.
He talked about trust.
He talked about responsibility.
He talked about how much easier everything could become if Amber stopped escalating the conflict.
The more he spoke, the clearer the contradiction became.
Anthony wanted the financial cutoff treated as a private relationship problem when Amber described its consequences.
But he also wanted Amber to accept those consequences inside a legal dispute where money determined whether she could keep professional representation.
The court did not need to decide the entire case that day to recognize the immediate imbalance.
After reviewing what had been presented, temporary measures were put in place so that financial access and information could not simply be used by one side to prevent the other from participating while the larger dispute continued.
It was not a final victory.
It did not settle every disagreement between Amber and Anthony.
It did not erase the fear Amber had lived with since losing access to the accounts.
But for the first time since Anthony shut her out financially, the decision was no longer his alone.
Anthony’s face changed when he understood that.
The confidence did not vanish completely.
It cracked.
“This is ridiculous,” he said afterward.
“You could have avoided all of this.”
Amber shifted the case files against her chest.
“By coming back?”
Anthony looked at her.
“By talking to me like a reasonable person.”
“I did talk to you.”
“You made demands.”
“I asked you to restore my access.”
Anthony’s jaw tightened.
“And now you’ve turned this into something it’s not.”
Amber thought about the first night at the table, when she had almost believed she had only two choices: surrender or somehow become strong enough to survive everything alone.
The truth was less dramatic.
She had needed a third choice.
Procedure.
Documentation.
