Chapter 5 — A Six-Year-Old Knew the Biker’s Secret Christmas Name

4.9Editorial score

Daniel still had grief to carry.

The adults handling his placement still had decisions to make.

Tank couldn’t fix any of that with a motorcycle or a sack of Christmas presents.

He understood that.

So he didn’t make a grand promise.

He asked one question.

“You want to help me unload the bikes?”

Daniel’s face changed instantly.

“All of them?”

“We’ve got thirty.”

The boy jumped from the chair.

Outside, Tank zipped his vest and handed Daniel a pair of oversized gloves from one of the riders.

The fingers hung several inches beyond the boy’s hands.

Daniel laughed and tried to carry a package almost as large as his chest.

Tank took the heavy end.

Together they walked it inside.

The rest of us followed.

Christmas resumed.

But something about the ride changed after that.

Not the route.

Not the motorcycles.

Not the ridiculous amount of tape some riders used on their presents.

The meaning changed.

We had always thought we were delivering things.

That afternoon made it impossible to believe the things were the most important part.

Before we left, Daniel stood near the doors while Tank put on his helmet.

“Are you coming next Christmas?” he asked.

The question stopped Tank.

Twelve years earlier, another child had asked him almost the same thing.

This time he knew exactly what his answer meant.

Tank crouched until they were eye level.

“Don’t believe me just because I say it,” he told Daniel.

Daniel frowned, recognizing the words.

Tank pointed toward the long driveway.

“Watch for the bikes.”

Daniel smiled.

Then Tank stood, climbed onto his Harley, and started the engine.

Thirty motorcycles rolled away from St.

Brigid’s beneath a hard Iowa winter sky.

In Tank’s inside pocket were two letters written twelve years apart by the same woman.

One had thanked him for a Christmas visit.

The other had told him what the visit became.

The following December, Daniel watched the driveway.

He heard the engines before he could see them.

Thirty bikes came around the bend.

Tank was in front.
