Chapter 5 — A Sick Twin’s Heart Exposed the Lie Between Her Parents

4.9Editorial score

Lila insisted her rabbit needed its own seat at breakfast.

Both girls called Avery’s tiny Brooklyn kitchen ‘the big kitchen’ because it was the biggest one they knew.

He learned these things carefully, through the photographs Avery chose to show him and the short visits she permitted while Nora recovered.

He never demanded more.

That restraint surprised Avery.

Perhaps it surprised Ethan too.

When the DNA results arrived, Avery came with the twins to a quiet consultation room at Cole Memorial.

The envelope sat unopened between them.

Ethan did not touch it.

‘You open it,’ he said.

Avery studied him, then broke the seal.

She read the page.

Her eyes closed briefly.

She passed it to him.

The probability of paternity was effectively conclusive.

Ethan looked at Nora.

Then Lila.

His daughters.

The word felt enormous.

Nora pointed at the paper.

‘Is that about my heart?’

Ethan lowered it immediately.

‘No.

Your heart is doing okay.’

‘Then why are you crying again?’

Avery let out a shaky laugh.

Ethan knelt so he was level with both girls.

‘Because I found out something important.’

Lila narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

‘Bad important?’

‘No.’

He looked toward Avery before saying anything else.

She gave the smallest nod.

‘Good important.’

The girls accepted that answer more easily than the adults did.

There was no instant family reunion.

Avery did not move into Ethan’s penthouse.

Ethan did not arrive with extravagant gifts.

Three stolen years could not be repaired with money, and both of them knew it.

The old message triggered a formal investigation into the obsolete account.

Records were preserved, outside counsel reviewed access logs, and the system that had allowed correspondence to be routed without Ethan’s knowledge was permanently closed.

The remaining question of who had used the credentials became a matter for professionals, not a mystery Ethan allowed to consume the girls’ lives.

His first responsibility was simpler.

Show up.

He attended Nora’s cardiology follow-up and brought his own childhood records so her doctors had a complete comparison.

He was screened again himself.

Lila was screened too and showed no concerning abnormality.

Nora’s condition required monitoring, not surgery.

Avery cried in the hospital bathroom after hearing that.

When she came out, Ethan was sitting on the floor outside with the twins because Lila had decided chairs were ‘too hospital.’

He did not mention Avery’s red eyes.

He simply moved over and made room.

Months passed.

Trust returned in inches.

Ethan learned to ask before entering Avery’s space.

Avery learned that silence from him no longer meant rejection; sometimes it meant he was trying not to push.
