Chapter 1 — Victor Thought He Owned My Sister—Until I Opened the Black Folder

4.9Editorial score

I opened the black folder.

Victor Hale stopped smiling.

For the first time since I had entered the warehouse, the glass of scotch in his hand trembled.

The first page contained no dramatic photograph, no secret confession, no mysterious code.

It was something far more dangerous to a man like Victor.

A board resolution.

His board resolution.

Effective 9:14 p.m., Victor Hale had been suspended as chief executive officer of Hale Meridian Holdings pending a criminal and financial investigation.

His signing authority had been revoked.

The company’s accounts had been frozen under emergency procedures.

Its security division had been instructed to cooperate with federal investigators.

And the person appointed interim custodian of the company’s voting interests until the investigation concluded was someone Victor had spent years dismissing as irrelevant.

Elena Hale.

My sister.

Victor read the name once.

Then again.

“That’s impossible.”

I looked past him toward Elena.

One of my men, Marcus, had moved beneath the beam.

He kept his hands visible and waited for the armed guards to decide whether they were still loyal to a man who no longer controlled their paychecks, their company, or their legal protection.

Victor slammed the folder shut.

“This is fake.”

“Call your board.”

“I don’t answer to my board.”

“You did four minutes ago.”

His jaw flexed.

Outside, engines roared into the warehouse yard.

The guards shifted uneasily.

Victor noticed.

“Nobody moves,” he snapped.

One gunman kept his pistol aimed at me, but his eyes went toward the warehouse entrance.

The second lowered his weapon by perhaps an inch.

Victor pointed at him.

“Raise it.”

The man hesitated.

That hesitation changed the room.

Victor had built his power by convincing everyone around him that resistance was useless.

He needed obedience to appear automatic.

The moment one man paused, everyone else saw the same thing.

Victor Hale could be disobeyed.

I nodded once toward Marcus.

He moved.

Another man from my team pulled a folding rescue blade from his jacket and climbed onto the steel platform beneath Elena while Marcus steadied her weight.

They worked carefully, supporting her before cutting the rope loose.

Victor shouted, “Get away from her!”

Nobody listened.

Elena collapsed into Marcus’s arms.

He lowered her gently to the floor and removed the gag.

She coughed, dragged in a breath, and whispered my name.

“Adrian.”

I crossed the space between us.

Victor’s gunman tracked me with his pistol.

I didn’t care anymore.

I crouched beside my sister.

“I’m here.”

Her fingers closed around my sleeve.
