Chapter 1 — He Called Me Clumsy—Then My Father’s Seal Appeared

4.9Editorial score

Naomi placed the folder on the hospital tray and opened it beneath the harsh white light.

Daniel recognized my father’s embossed seal before he could read a single word.

For three years, he had treated that seal as decoration.

He displayed it in the Hartwell Logistics boardroom, stamped it on company invitations, and positioned himself beneath it whenever photographers came to corporate events.

Now he stared at it as though it were a weapon.

“What is she doing here?” he demanded again.

Naomi did not answer him.

She looked at me.

“Evelyn, do you understand where you are?”

My throat felt raw.

I nodded.

“Do you know who this man is?”

“My husband.”

Daniel exhaled sharply, relieved that I had spoken.

Then I added, “He did this to me.”

The relief disappeared.

One officer moved between Daniel and the bed.

The other asked him to step toward the wall.

Daniel lifted both hands, performing innocence as naturally as he had performed concern.

“This is absurd.

She fell in the shower.

Ask anyone who knows her.

Evelyn has always been accident-prone.”

Dr.

Shah stood near the foot of my bed, his expression unchanged.

“These injuries are in different stages of healing,” he said.

“Several are consistent with forceful restraint.

None of that is explained by one fall tonight.”

Daniel looked at me with the same warning he had used across dinner tables and crowded rooms.

It was a look designed to remind me that he controlled what happened after everyone left.

But this time, no one was leaving me alone with him.

The officer asked Daniel to turn around.

He laughed.

“You are arresting me because of bruises? My wife is confused.

She takes things personally.

She has episodes.”

Naomi removed a small audio device from the folder.

“Would one of those episodes include recording you threatening to have her declared incompetent?”

Daniel’s face stiffened.

Naomi pressed a button.

His voice filled the room.

If you challenge me, I will tell everyone you are unstable.

I will have doctors sign whatever I need.

You will never touch the company again.

Daniel lunged toward the tray.

The officer caught his arm and forced it behind his back.

“That recording is illegal,” Daniel shouted.

Naomi calmly switched it off.

“That question can be argued later.

Tonight, the police are concerned with what happened to Evelyn.”

The cuffs closed around Daniel’s wrists.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked smaller than the room he occupied.

He twisted toward me as the officers led him to the door.

“You think she will protect you?” he said.

“You think that folder changes anything? The house is mine.

The accounts are mine.
