Chapter 1 — My Husband Used My Money to Exclude Me From My Own Birthday

The manager placed the two reservation slips side by side and asked Brian to come closer.

Brian stared at them, then at the debit card resting beside my hand.

His face changed so quickly that even Diane noticed.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

Brian ignored her.

“Emily,” he said quietly, “why are you here?”

It was the same tone he used whenever he wanted me to believe I was the one behaving strangely.

I didn’t answer him.

I looked at the restaurant manager instead.

He had been remarkably professional during our phone call that morning.

I had told him exactly what I knew: a dinner for five had been prepaid using my personal debit card; I had not authorized Brian to use that card for the reservation; and I had photographs showing that the event had intentionally been concealed from me.

He had verified my identity and the transaction details before explaining that because I was the cardholder, the restaurant could cancel the disputed reservation and return the payment to the original card, subject to their cancellation procedures.

So I had cancelled it.

Then I had made another reservation.

For myself.

Same evening.

Same restaurant.

And, because the table had immediately become available after the cancellation, the same table.

That was the simple plan Brian had never imagined.

I wasn’t going to scream at him in our kitchen.

I wasn’t going to spend my birthday begging him to explain why his mother, sister, brother, sister-in-law, and husband all believed I should finance a celebration from which I was excluded.

I was going to let him arrive confident that I was at home, unaware and obedient.

Then I was going to watch him discover that the woman he had treated like a bank account was also the person whose name was attached to the money.

The manager looked at Brian.

“Mr.

Carter, the reservation originally made under your name was cancelled by the cardholder.

The payment is being returned to her account.”

Silence settled over the entrance.

Brian blinked.

“Cancelled?”

“Yes, sir.”

“You can’t do that.

It was prepaid.”

The manager remained calm.

“The cardholder contacted us regarding unauthorized use of her payment method.

We verified her identity.”

Brian finally looked at me.

Not hurt.

Not ashamed.

Angry.

That told me more than any apology could have.

“You called the restaurant?”

“Yes.”

Diane stepped forward.

“Emily, whatever disagreement you two are having, couldn’t this have waited? We came all the way downtown.”

I almost laughed.

That was Diane’s special talent.

She could walk directly into someone else’s betrayal and immediately locate the inconvenience to herself.

“Waited until when?” I asked.

She frowned.

“Until you were home.

This doesn’t need to be public.”

Rebecca suddenly became fascinated by the floor.

Jason shifted his weight.

Megan stood slightly behind him, clutching her purse with both hands.

Nobody asked why Brian had used my debit card.
