The first frame appeared on the screen beside my attorney’s open folder, and Margaret’s face changed before anyone else in the room understood why.
I was still holding Ethan against my chest.
His skin felt frighteningly hot through the thin blanket, and every instinct in me wanted to forget the folder, forget Margaret, forget every question and run straight toward medical help.
That was exactly why I had arranged for help to arrive with me.
One of the responders moved toward Ethan while another went upstairs to Claire.
The military police remained near the doorway, not shouting, not threatening anyone, simply making sure nobody interfered while the situation was secured.
My attorney stood beside the entry table with his hand on the folder.
Vanessa looked from him to Margaret.
“What is that?”
Margaret answered too quickly.
“Nothing.”
My attorney looked at her.
“Then you won’t mind if he sees it.”
He meant me.
Margaret stepped toward the table.
One of the officers shifted slightly into her path.
It wasn’t dramatic.
He didn’t touch her.
He didn’t need to.
She stopped.
The video began playing.
There was no sound at first, only the grainy view from a small camera inside the house.
The angle showed part of the downstairs hallway and the entrance to the room where Claire usually kept household records.
A date appeared in the file information on my attorney’s device, but the screen itself was angled away from Margaret now.
The recording had been recovered with other material investigators had preserved after I reported the strange changes in Claire’s communications.
On the video, Margaret walked into the room carrying a stack of papers.
Vanessa followed her.
Present-day Vanessa stared at the screen.
“Turn that off.”
My attorney ignored her.
The recording showed Margaret opening a cabinet, searching through documents and placing several items into a bag.
Vanessa stood near the door watching.
Then Claire entered the frame.
Even without clear audio, her body language was unmistakable.
She reached for the bag.
Margaret pulled it away.
Vanessa stepped between Claire and the exit.
I felt my jaw tighten.
Claire had never told me about that incident.
Later, I understood why.
By then, Margaret had already taken control of her phone often enough that Claire no longer knew which messages would actually reach me.
The next recovered clip had sound.
Margaret’s recorded voice filled the hallway.
“He’s not here.
He doesn’t know what’s happening.”
Claire answered, “It’s his house too.”
Margaret laughed.
“Not for long.”
Beside me, the real Margaret snapped, “That’s taken out of context.”
My attorney finally looked directly at her.
“We’ll get to the context.”
Vanessa folded her arms, but the smugness was gone.
The recording continued.
Margaret was demanding information from Claire about accounts connected to the property.
Claire repeatedly said she did not have authority to change anything and that the property had been purchased through arrangements established before Margaret ever moved in.
That detail mattered.
