Chapter 1 — His Ex Brought Their Baby to His Wedding—But He Never Invited Her

The folder opened with a soft crack.

The first thing Bennett saw was not a legal document or a financial demand.

It was a photograph from a prenatal scan.

Claire Ellison’s name appeared along the edge.

The date was seventeen months earlier, when their divorce negotiations had barely begun.

Someone had circled a tiny shape in blue ink and written eight weeks beneath it.

Bennett touched the corner as though the paper might burn him.

Under the scan lay three cream envelopes addressed to his private office.

Each had been opened neatly along the top.

Each carried Claire’s handwriting.

None had ever reached him.

“What is this?” he asked.

His voice sounded distant, even to himself.

Lillian stood beside the abandoned bouquet.

“I found the folder three nights ago.”

Evelyn recovered enough to lift her chin.

“You searched my private desk?”

“You asked me to retrieve the final guest list from the locked cabinet in your study,” Lillian replied.

“This was filed behind the wedding contracts.”

Guests shifted in their chairs.

The string quartet had stopped playing.

Without music, every breath seemed loud.

Bennett removed the first letter.

Claire had written it before the divorce was final.

Bennett, I know you may not believe me, but I am pregnant.

I have enclosed the doctor’s confirmation.

I am frightened, and I do not know where we stand, but you deserve to know.

Please call me directly.

Please do not send anyone else.

The second letter was dated six weeks later.

The third had been written after Claire’s visit to Hawthorne Tower.

Its final sentence had been underlined twice.

Your mother says you want us gone.

I need to hear that from you, not from her lawyers.

Bennett looked at Claire.

She stood several yards away with Willa against her shoulder, prepared to leave the moment anyone moved toward her.

The baby’s fingers remained tangled around the gold crescent necklace.

“I never saw these,” Bennett said.

“I know that now,” Claire answered.

“I did not know it then.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Letters can be manufactured.

Dates can be copied.

Lillian has created a spectacle without understanding what she found.”

Lillian reached into the folder and removed a page bearing Hawthorne Tower’s internal routing code.

“I understood this.”

It was an instruction sent from Evelyn’s office to Bennett’s executive staff.

All calls, mail, visits, and deliveries from Claire Ellison were to be redirected to outside counsel without notifying Bennett.

The order had been issued four days after Claire’s first letter arrived.

Below it was the lobby report from the day Claire had come to the tower while pregnant.

Her arrival time was listed.

So was Evelyn’s.

The report noted that Claire had been escorted from the building after refusing to sign documents presented by Hawthorne counsel.

Bennett read every line.

The vineyard blurred around him.

For two years he had believed Claire had vanished because she wanted a complete break.
