Chapter 1 — He Smirked as I Gave Up Everything—Then Lily Entered

4.9Editorial score

Judge Whitman held the tiny recorder between two fingers while the red light continued to blink.

No one in the courtroom moved.

David stared at the device as though it were something alive.

Jessica’s hand slid away from his arm, and the smug confidence she had carried into the room disappeared behind a rigid, frightened expression.

Lily stood near the open doors, clutching the rabbit against her chest.

The torn seam beneath its arm hung loose where she had pulled out the recorder.

The judge looked at her gently.

“Lily, do you know what is on this?”

The little girl nodded.

“Daddy and Jessica talking.”

David immediately rose.

“Your Honor, this is absurd.

She is six years old.

She doesn’t understand what she recorded or how it got there.”

The bailiff stepped between David and the aisle.

Judge Whitman did not raise her voice.

“Sit down, Mr.

Caldwell.”

David hesitated before lowering himself into his chair.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

One hand remained on my stomach while the other gripped the edge of the table.

Lily had been born only months after David and I married.

He told me her mother was no longer involved and that Lily deserved stability.

Whatever pain existed between the adults, I refused to make a child carry it.

I learned how she liked her toast cut.

I sat beside her during fevers.

I packed her lunches, attended school meetings, and kept the hallway light on when storms frightened her.

She called me by my first name, but when she woke from nightmares, she called for me the way other children called for their mothers.

After I discovered David’s affair with Jessica, he changed the locks while I was at a prenatal appointment.

He told me Lily did not want to see me.

I had believed him because I had no way to reach her.

Now she was standing ten feet away, trembling because he had made her part of his plan.

Judge Whitman placed the recorder on the bench.

“Before anything is played, I want the record to reflect that this device was voluntarily produced by the child after she approached the court in distress.”

My attorney leaned toward me.

“Do not say anything yet,” he whispered.

“Let the judge handle it.”

Jessica suddenly spoke.

“That recorder belongs to Lily.

She records stories on it.

Anything could be on there.”

The judge looked at her.

“You were warned about interrupting.”

Jessica pressed her lips together.

Judge Whitman asked Lily where she had gotten the recorder.

“It was in my rabbit,” Lily said.

“I put it there because Daddy takes my things when he’s angry.”

David’s face tightened.

The judge asked why she had turned it on.

Lily glanced toward me.

“Jessica told me I had to practice what I would say about her.

I didn’t want to.

I thought if I recorded them, somebody would believe me.”

A quiet sound escaped my throat before I could stop it.

Lily looked frightened that she had done something wrong.

I shook my head and mouthed, “You’re okay.”
